The Pin-Ups of the World: Mexico/ Pin-Upki swiata: Meksyk.

This year’s travel to the USA opened my eyes to the real world of Pin-Up.
Meeting women from all around the globe made me curious, why they chose this style, why they loved it so much and what, in their opinion, brings more and more women into this fashion?

I am more of a doer than a thinker, so not waiting too long and to feed my hunger of knowledge, I decided to contact those lovely Pin-Ups and simply ask them everything I wanted to know :D

Cherry Bee: Why Cherry Up? What is the story behind this name?
Cherry Up: Long short story, when I was in high-school, I had my hair dyed in red, the first option of my classmates was “tomato head”, and of course that doesn’t sound cute, so they changed it to “Cereza”, it means “Cherry” in Spanish.
Very original, ha!?
And the “Up” I stole word from the “Pin Up” word…So I mixed it (Ha Ha I’m a genius!).
Yeah I know, it’s so cliché, but I like it and reminds me of the beginning of this journey.

Cherry Bee: Dlaczego Cherry Up? Jaka historia kryje sie za tym pseudonimem?
Cherry Up: Streszczajac: w liceum zafarbowalam sie na rudo. Moi koledzy i kolezanki z klasy, wymyslili dla mnie przezwisko: Pomidorowa Glowa. Nie brzmi to zbyt milo, wiec zmienili je na ”Cereza”, co oznacza ”Wisnia” (Cherry) po hiszpansku. Bardzo oryginalne, co?!
Drugi czlon ‘Up’ ukradlam z okreslenia ‘Pin-Up’. I wyszla Cherry Up (Hahaha, jestem geniuszem!).
Wiem, ze to moze troche cliche, ale mnie sie podoba i przypomina mi o poczatkach tej przygody.

ChB:How would you describe your style?
ChUp: Ummm a tough one… I think it would be like a fierce sexy Mexican indigenous girl but also with a touch of sweetness.
I like to try different styles. Marrying just one is so limiting (talking about clothes right? ;) ).

ChB: Jakbys opisala swoj styl?
ChUp: Hmmm… to trudne pytanie. Mysle,ze najlepszym okresleniem bylaby: ognista, sexowna Meksykanka, z odrobina slodyczy. Staram sie probowac wielu stylow. Poslubienie jednego, jest bardzo ograniczajace (ciagle mowimy o ubraniach ;)).

ChB:When and why were you drawn to this style?
ChUp: I started showing appreciation for the aesthetic when I was 10 years old. I used to see photos of my grandmother (gosh she was hermosa) and I immediately knew I wanted to look like her!
However it wasn’t until my 17th birthday, till I started to dress up and learn more about the Pin-Up style.
You know, we all start somewhere and my case, it was a bit of a mess. It took me a long before I could truly find myself.
At the beginning I didn’t feel confident, because it’s a totally different style, at least in Mexico you don’t get to see many girls with that look, so I was the “weirdo”. Not to mention, that I’m a small town girl, and they didn’t appreciate how much I stood out.
It was a long time coming, but I never let anyone, not even myself, talk me out of dressing this way.
Nowadays I can tell you that I truly love how I look, and this style in particular brings me great confidence. For the first time, this small town girl doesn’t feel ugly and I owe it all to becoming a Pin-Up.

ChB: Kiedy i jak wpadlas na ten styl?
ChUp: Od 10 roku zycia jestem estetka. Kiedys patrzylam na zdjecia mojej babci (bosze, jaka ona byla hermosa >piekna<) i wiedzialam,ze chce wygladac jak ona! Niestety nie zaczelam sie ubierac w tym stylu do 17 urodzin. Od tego czasu ucze sie o tym stylu i nosze sie w nim. Wiesz jak to jest, wszyscy gdzies zaczynamy. Moje poczatki byly troche chaotyczne. Dlugo mi zajelo, zanim naprawde znalazlam siebie. Na poczatku nie czulam sie zbyt peanie, poniewaz jest to zupelnie odmienny styl, przynajmniej w Meksyku niewiele dziewczyn sie tak ubiera, wiec bylam tym 'dziwadlem'. Nie wspominajac, ze pochodze z malego miasteczka, wiec mieszkancy nie akceptowali tego, ze sie wyrozniam. To byl naprawde dlugi okres, ale nigdy nie pozwolilam ani innym ani sobie, zrezygnowac z tej sciezki. Dzisiaj moge Ci powiedziec, ze kocham to, jak wygladam, a styl Pin-Up daje mi duzo pewnosci siebie. Po raz pierwszy ta malomiasteczkowa dziewczyna nie czuje sie brzydka i zawdzieczam to byciu Pin-Upka. ChB:What is it about this style that inspires you so much?
ChUp: Definitely that it is so empowering. I think it’s a style where you can play being the sexy and bad woman but also one day you can be de sweet and smiley girl. Also I like cute clothes, the big dresses, petticoats, flowers… I feel pretty and comfortable in those clothes.

ChB: Co takiego jest w tym stylu, ze az tak Cie zainspirowal?
ChUp: Zdecydowanie to, ze dodaje Ci pewnosci siebie. Wydaje mi sie, ze jest to z tyl w ktorym jednego dnia mozesz grac bycie sexowna, niedobra dziewczynka, a nastepnego slodka, rozesmiana. Poza tym lubie slodkie ubrania, ogromne sukienki, halki, kwiaty… Czuje sie piekna i swobodna w tych ciuszkach.

ChB: Do you see this style more of a daily wear or a way to dress for a special occasions?
ChUp: I’ll go for both. You can dress relaxed but also you can be overdressed. How you used it depends on you and how comfortable you are in it daily.

ChB: Czy ubierasz sie tak na co dzien, czy bardziej na wyjatkowe okazje?
ChUp: I tak i tak. W tym stylu mozesz byc za rowno swobodna jak i elegancka. Od Ciebie zalezy jak sie nim bawisz i jak dobrze sie w nim czujesz na co dzien.

ChB:Do you have a favourite decade?
ChUp: Yes! My favourite decade must be the 40’s, even though I dress more like a 50’s modern girl (because it’s fresher and more comfortable to wear in Mexico streets).
The forties have that “femme fatale” inspiration for me, I’m a big fan of suits.

ChB: Czy masz ulubiona dekade?
ChUp: Tak! Pomimo, ze wiekszosc moich stylizacji jest bardziej z lat 50tych (z prostej przyczyny: sa wygodniejsze do noszenia), to moja ulubiona dekada sa lata 40te. Jestem wielka fanka garnitorow i tego stylu ‘femme fatale’ z lat 40tych.

ChB:Who is your biggest inspiration/role model?
ChUp: For sure two of the most famous Mexican Divas, María Félix aka “La doña” and Lupe Vélez.
They are my top… And for the modern look I’ll go for Aida Dapo, Angelique Noire, Miriam Rodriguez, Jasmin Rodriguez, Leticia Rodriguez, Miss Winny, Ava Elderwood… basically all the people I follow on social media, they are inspirational!

ChB: Kto jest dla Ciebie najwieksza inspiracja/wzorem do nasladowania?
ChUp: Zdecydowanie dwie, naslawniejsze meksykanskie Divy: María Félix aka “La doña” oraz Lupe Vélez. Znajduja sie one na samym szczycie, jesli chodzi o zrodlo, z jakich czerpie inspiracje. Jesli chodzi o wspolczene osoby: ida Dapo, Angelique Noire, Miriam Rodriguez, Jasmin Rodriguez, Leticia Rodriguez, Miss Winny, Ava Elderwood… wlasciwie wszyscy, ktorych sledze w mediach spolecznosciowych, sa dla mnie inspiracja!

ChB:How do you find yourself in the XXI century fashion world? Is there anything nowadays that you love to wear?
ChUp: Do I look like someone who follows the trends? Lol. Personally I’m not into the modern fashion world. I’m not the kind of person, who buys a magazine or search for what’s trending now.
I admit there are some cool stuffs, that I absolutely would try on, but most of the time I notice them, because of my friends or some random post.
I try to follow the ideology that “if I see it and like it, I’ll buy it and wear it”. Don’t mind if it’s vintage or modern…

ChB: Jak sie odnajdujesz w modzie XXI wieku? Czy jest cos wspolczesnego, co kochasz nosic?
ChUp: Czy ja wygladam na kogos, kto podaza za trendami? LOL. Osobiscie nie sledze wspolczesnej mody. Nie jestem osoba, ktora kupuje magazyny o modzie, ale poszukuje najnowszysch trendow.
Musze przyznac, ze sa pewne wspolczesne rzeczy, ktore wydaja mi sie interesujace, ale wiekszosci z nich zauwazam przez moich znajomych albo jakis post, ktory gdzies zostal opublikowany.
Staram sie wyznawac ideologie: Jesli widze cos, co mi sie podoba, kupuje to i nosze. Nie ma znaczenia, czy jest to vintage czy cos wspolczesnego.

ChB: Except for being a model you are also a Youtuber, what do you love the most in making the videos?
ChUp: Yes I am!… I love to help people, in any kind of way. I think via my Youtube Channel I can help girls to achieve the look they where looking for or sometimes I may help them to feel beautiful in their bodies, give them confidence to wear or do whatever they want.
Also sharing some tips so this way they can avoid the stress.
It’s so gratifying when someone thank you for sharing your work with them. It’s my way to share the things I’ve learned during this journey

ChB: Poza tym, ze jestes modelka, jestes takze Youtuberka. Co kochasz najbardziej w tworzeniu filmow?
ChUp: Tak, jestem! Kocham pomagac ludziom, w kazdy mozliwy sposob. Poprzez moj kanal na YouTube, moge pomoc dziewczynom, ktore chca osiagnac ten efekt, ktory chcialy albo pomoc im poczuc sie pieknymi, dodawac im pewnosci siebie, ze moga ubrierac sie tak, jak tylko maja ochote. Dodatkowo moge sie dzielic wskazowkami, ktore eliminuja stres zwiazany z poszukiwaniem nowego stylu.
Moment, kiedy ktos ci dziekuje, za to,ze dzielisz sie z nimi swoja praca jest bezcenny. To jest po prostu moj sposob na dzielenie sie tym, czego sie nauczylam podczas tej podrozy.

ChB: What can we see on your YT channel?
ChUp: Tutorial on how to get the look from 20’s to 70’s. It’s like a little space, where we can have some appreciation for the vintage look. Also some tips to make it easier to do makeup or hairstyle, reviews from some products, get to know me better. Also you can learn Spanish!

ChB: Co dokladnie mozemy znalezc na kanale?
ChUp: Wskazowki i porady, jak stylizowac sie na lata od 20tych do 70tych. To jest to miejsce, gdzie mozemy docenic te style przeszlych dekad.
Dodatkowo mozecie znalezc wskazowki, jak pewne rzeczy zrobic szybciej i latwiej a propos makijazu, fryzur, recenzje produktow oraz poznac mnie lepiej. Dodatkowo mozecie uczyc sie hiszpanskiego!

ChB: Your Instagram account grows rapidly and is really ease on the eye. How long did it take you to get so many followers?
ChUp: I joined instagram 3 year ago, at first I wasn’t sure (I am not a fan of social media) but it was a big opportunity to share the work I started doing at that time and to connect with wonderful people, as yourself!
I’ve got so many opportunities since I joined, and I feel so thankful for the response I’ve got.
I think my increase in numbers was at that time when I started to share my culture and standing from my people.
I think people appreciate someone, who is authentic and confident.
When I started, I was trying to copy others and tried to fit in ‘the Pin-Up standards’, forgetting how rich my culture is.
That’s what defines me! Finally, once I found myself, the numbers and likes came along.
The most important is be comfortable with yourself and then you will be able to show that to the world.

ChB: Twoje konto na Instagramie rosnie w zaskakujacym tempie i jest bardzo przyjemne dla oka. Jak dlugo zajelo Ci zdobycie tylu obserwujacych?
ChUp: Konto na Instagramie zalozylam 3 lata temu. Na poczatku nie bylam go pewna ( nie jestem fanem mediow spolecznosciowych), ale byla to fantastyczna okazja, zeby podzielic sie tym, co robie i byc w kontakcie z takimi cudownymi osobami jak Ty!
Instagram otworzyl mi wiele drzwi i jestem bardzo wdzieczna, za to, ze zostalam tak dobrze przyjeta.
Wydaje mi sie, ze liczba obserwujacych wzrosla, kiedy zaczelam propagowac moja kulture i podziwiac moich ludzi.
Poczatkowo staralam sie kopiowac innych i wpisywac sie w tzw. ‘standardy Pin-Up’, zapominajac jak bogata jest moja kultura.
To jest w koncu cos, co mnie definiuje! Kiedy w koncu odnalazlam siebie, liczby i lajki same zaczely naplywac.
Najwazniejsze, to czuc sie dobrze ze soba i wtedy mozesz zaczac inspirowac swiat.

ChB: How much time do you put into it?
ChUp: To be honest, I’ve never thought about it. I’ve put more love than time ;)

ChB: Ile czasu temu poswiecasz?
ChUp: Szczerze, to nigdy sie nad tym nie zastanawialam. Wkladam w to wiecej milosci niz czasu ;)

ChB: You have been taking part in the Viva Las Vegas Fashion Show this year, tell me about the experience?
ChUp: Yes indeed!… Everytime I remember it I can not help it and smile. This is one of the biggest opportunities I ever had.
I have no words to describe all that comes to my heart, I’m very thankful with Fran (owner of Prettie Lanes, the company I modeled for). It such an honor, that someone looked at my work and loved it enough to make a me part of something so big as VLV.
This experience had gives me even more opportunities now.
I get to know many wonderful and talented girls, as yourself, making new friends all over the world and sharing something that all of us love with so much pasion. Also meeting with girls that I’ve follow since for ever and thought I could never meet.
Everything was on point, the only thing I can say it’s FANTASTIC!. Best experience ever!

ChB: Bralas udzial w pokazie mody podczas Viva Las Vegas w tym roku, opowiedz nam o tym doswiadczeniu?
ChUp: Tak, dokladnie! Za kazdym razem, kiedy o tym pomysle, to sie usmiecham! To jest jedna z najwiekszych kooperacji, w jakich bralam udzial, do tej pory. Nie mam slow, zeby opisac jak bardzo jestem wdzieczna Fran ( wlascicielce Prettie Lanes Company), za to ze moglam dla niej modelowac. To jest wielki zaszczyt, kiedy ktos patrzy na Twoja prace i podoba mu sie ona tak bardzo, ze prosi cie, zebys wziela udzial w czyms tak niezwyklym jak Viva Las Vegas! To wydarzenie otworzylo mi wiele drzwi!
Poznalam wiele cudownych osob,z calego swiata, takich jak Ty, z ktorymi moge dzielic milosc i pasje. Takze poznanie ludzi, ktorych normalnie sledze w mediach spolecznosciowych i myslalam, ze nigdy nie bede miala szansy poznac na zywo!
Wszystko bylo na medal! Jedyna rzeczy jaka moge powiedziec, to ze bylo FANTASTYCZNIE! Najlepsze wydarzenie w moim zyciu!

ChB:What does word: “feminine” mean to you?
ChUp: It’s a very subjective word to me. Being “feminine” can have a lot of definitions depending on a person, it also have a socially standardized meaning. To me being feminine mean that I identify myself as a woman.

ChB: Co oznacza dla Ciebie slowo “kobiecość”?
ChUp: To slowo jest bardzo subiektywne. Bycie ‘kobieca’ moze miec wiele definicji, wszystko zalezy od osoby. Ma takze standardowe znaczenie, narzucone nam przez spoleczenstwo. Dla mnie bycie kobieca, znaczy ze identyfikuje siebie jako kobiete.

ChB: Why do you think women nowadays are really beginning to show interest in the Pin-Up style?
ChUp: Because they like it I imagine. They feel attracted to the fashion style. Some see the inspirations in the movies and they get curious.
Or maybe because every year we are more and that got some attention of the movement.

ChB: Jak myslisz, dlaczego wspolczesne kobiety wykazuja coraz wieksze zainteresowanie stylem Pin-Up?
ChUp: Poniewaz lubia jak wyglada. Ten styl je przyciaga. Niektore ogladaja stare filmy, inspiruja sie nimi i wzbudza to ich ciekawosc do dalszych poszukiwan. Albo dlatego, ze kazdego roku ta spolecznosc rosnie, jestesmy coraz bardziej widoczne i ten styl po prostu zaczyna wzbudzac coraz wieksze zainteresowanie.

ChB: If you could pick one star (late or alive) to have a dinner with, who would that be?
ChUp: Uffff there are so many! Maybe Maria Féliz, Mexican actress or Nicolas Tesla.

ChB: Jesli moglabys wybrac jedna gwiazde (zywa lub nie), z ktora mialabys szanse zasiasc do kolacji, kto by to byl?
ChUp: Oj, tyle ich jest! Moze Maria Féliz, meksykanska aktorka lub Nicolas Tesla.
